Do Whales and Dolphins Sleep?

  1. They are able to sleep with one half of their brain at a time, so they are always techincally "half awake".  I've heard they can even eat in their sleep, since they are still somewhat awake


  2. Yes. Most species typically head to deeper waters to sleep as they can hold their "breath" for a long time and its a little safer. They are in pods and families and I do not think that whole pods sleep at the same time. Some species of whale actually sleep at the surface of the water, but I'm not sure which that is.

  3. Yes they sleep. They instinctually swim and rise to the surface to breathe, even while asleep.
