  1. The independence of Portugal from the kingdom of León started in 1128 under Afonso Henriques, who proclaimed himself King in 1139.

    He was then known as Afonso I.

    The next person to be king after him was his son who became King in 1185.  He was Sancho I.

    In English, sometimes you will see Afonso's name as Alphonzo and Sancho's name as Sanctius.
