the straits separate the med and the atlantic and also it's the shortest crossing between africa and europe!  It's been fought over forever because of the trade routes and the strategic importance of it's position, the moors had it, the spanish had it and of course the brits, who still won't give it back !!! Britain will give up gibraltar when the barbary apes are gone or something like that !!! Hop this helps ye a wee bit bud !
