What was wrong with segregation? It worked. Why was it wrong, and shouldn't it be brought back?

  1. How did it work, and why does race matter?

  2. The main problem is that blacks weren't given equal facilities as whites.  The black schools weren't funded as well, the black water fountains weren't as good, you get the picture.  Personally I'd love to live in a segregated society if we could actually be separate but equal, the equal part just never seems to work out.

  3. i can't believe you're asking this.

All the best facilities go to one section and all the worst go to the other, thats what wrong with it!

  4. Well, let's see --you have one race of people who, at best are treated as second-class citizens and at worst, something less than human.

The 1896 Supreme Court ruling in Plessy vs. ferguson found that accomodations could be segregated by race, as long as the accomodations were equal.

But, in practice, the accommodations are never equal. Those in the minority get stuck with facilities that the majority would never accept.

And you consider this system to be working

In 1954, the Court reversed itself, agreeing that separate can never be equal. nI think society has improved axs a result.

  5. It was never right to segregate. But creating the welfare state was not the answer.
