  1. If you have a heater that puts out enough heat 95% of the time you can use a 2nd stage (additional heater) to add heat when needed. Case in point a medical center has a roof top heater. This keeps the medical center at temp. most of the time. If it gets too cold and the roof top heater can no longer keep the medical center at a comfortable temperature the second stage (in this case heating elements in the ceiling) come on to bring it up to temperature.

I hope I have explained this well.

  2. some air conditioning units have a second stage of cooling...this would either be a larger second compressor or an unloading compressor....More less how it works the second stage will engage when the heat load in the house becomes to high giving you more cooling capacity....With just single stage cooling the a/c either runs at 100% or it doesn't. With 2-satge the first stage will run a majority of the time colling your house down using less energy until the t-stat tells the unit that the second stage is required to keep up with the cooling demand. Basically a first and a second speed.

  3. im not sure ,i know what is called a sequencer,it turns on heating units 1 at a time  letting 1 heat before turning on the others,it lessens the load so not to blow a fuse.........tom

  4. This type of thermostat is used in systems that have more than one compressor. If the temerature reaches a point at or above the set target temperature. the first compressor starts. If the temerature continues to rise, the second compressor is initialized.Basically if cruising speed doesn't do the job, it kicks into overdrive.
