What, in your opinion, is the best steel for wilderness survival knives?

I'm asking because I feel tempted to get a San Mai III Recon Scout Knife.

  1. 304 stainless is common and works well. It will hold an edge when properly sharpened.

    316 is a better grade but not as common in knife blades. It is also a bit more difficult to sharpen.

    Either of those are good choices.


  2. Steel as in best deal or Steel as in material for the knife? as for material i would say surgical steel is good, for the best deal i would look for a buck hunting knife or a knife by kershaw.
