What, in your opinion is the best engine, and why?

depends on what u mean by "best".

A rotary engine gives good power and is fuel efficient.

A boxer type engine where the pistons are opposite each other instead of the "v" shape gives great performance.

The best engine is BMW's 3.0-litre twin turbo in-line six-cylinder winning the International Engine of the Year award for the second time running. Generally, the best engines come from BMW and VW.

I love the Flat 4 and 6 used by Subaru and Porsche.  Little different design but same concept.  Awesome engines.

Ha ha - "Rotary - fuel efficient" yeah right - nice engines, but fuel efficient, they are not.

BMW's 3.0L twin turbo six has won alot of awards, must be doing something right

I would have to say an inline diesel engine.  inline motors don't have the harmonic vibrations experienced by V type motors.  diesels are more fuel efficient and have less harmful pollution plus the gobs of torque they are capable of allows them to be kept at low RPMS further improving their reliability and longevity.
