Question:

What 2 decks in Magic: The Gathering are great to duel against?

Me and my friend want to start playing, but can't decide what decks we both want. However we want a match that will last long and require much thought. We don't really enjoy playing fast decks such as the goblin or faerie deck.

We want a game that will last many turns and be pretty much fairly even between the 2 decks with some advantages the other does not have in both.

I would appreciate it if you could first specify what colors our 2 decks should be (We were planning on having an at least 2 color deck). And then maybe list a few strong cards that should be included in either of the decks to give us both a guideline on what we should look for.

Also is there any website out there that makes it easy to find a card in Magic: The Gathering? Like if I don't know the name of it but i know what color I am looking for and if I need a spell or creature and what-not...

Please list keep the cards within Extended format.

  1. Theme decks are usually very balanced, and you can find them in both the core set (10th edition) or the expert sets as well. Some are mono colored, and others have 2 or more colors. I'd suggest picking up one for you and your friend, they should provide sufficently lengthy and entertaining games for both of you.

If by chance one of the decks seems too powerful, try replacing the cards that seem unbalanced (one way or another) with more appropriate cards. However, wizards is usually pretty good with making theme decks balanced, so this should be a non-issue.

  2. Finally, a MTG question...

You should both consider creating "Sliver" themed decks. Slivers are creature types that give all other slivers abalities. If 2 Sliver decks duel, the chaos gets real crazy real quick.

There were 2 "generations" of Sliver cards. The first generation, most Slivers had abalities that required 2 colorless mana to use ("Heartstone" was a good artifact to have because it decreased the cost by 1). The 2nd generation relied more on "tapping" to use the abalities.

Plan on making 3-5 color decks. Good cards are "Sliver Queen", "Heartstone", and "Coat of Arms".

The link below is a good resource for cards.

If you 2 are ever in Topeka, look me up and we'll duel!

  4. Well, you are asking a pretty tricky question, because you are asking which 2 decks have very balanced (or similar) power levels.

Tier 1 tournament decks are not good choices, since they focus on ending the game as fast and efficientyl possible. Probably a couple of tier 2 decks. Look on the Oddysey/Onslaught season decks since they had so many different archetypes and most of them were balanced.

Also try different formats. Mental magic is a great format to keep the odds even. To play it, shuffle a random number of cards into a single deck, and every player draws 7 (no lands). You can choose to play a card face down, if you do it is considered a land that produce any color of mana, and counts as plains, mountain, island, swamp, forest. You can play the spells in your hand as any card as long as they share the mana cost of the card in your hand. In other words: if you have an unsummon in hand, you can play it as an unsummon, a force spike, a merfolk of the pearl trident, and ancestral recall, a ponder, twiddle, etc.

Once a player plays a spell, no other player can play the same spell for the rest of the game. That means that if you play that goldmeadow harrier from your hand as a swords to plowshares, no one can play swords to plowshares for the rest of the game.

    Hope this helps. Good luck
