I want to stay in the lower $1000's on price. I am looking at the Gary Fisher Cobia, Canondale Caffine, Specialized Rockhopper Comp, or a slightly more expensive version of the above bikes (if it is really worth the extra money). Most of my research has them rated about the same, but I do not know which is the best buy. I want this bike to last. I do a lot of hard gravel riding, paved trail, and also some mountain biking.

  1. Although I love my GF, I'd rank the Cobie at the bottom of the list due to its lower end component spec.  You'd have to move up the the Paragon level (maybe a close out 2008?  if you can stand the wussy babyblue frame)   I wouldnt buy a Cannon with the 'Lefty' fork because it isnt a solid design.  I didnt find any info on a 29er from Specalized in the Rockhopper line so I cant comment on that one.
