Question:

What 35 mm camera should I buy where I could still use my lens from my Canon Digital Rebel XTi?

I'm a begginer in photography and taking classes. The class requires us to have a 35 mm camera. I was thinking of purchasing a Canon AE-1 but heard somewhere that I can';t use my current lens. Thanks!

  1. Check this for the source of 35mm and its cameras.

  2. I second what fhotoace said. I would like to emphasise that if your lenses are EF-S (the kit lens for the XTi is) they will NOT work on any film cameras.

  3. Any EOS 35 mm Canon can use you lenses that are EF ... EF-S lenses are for use only on Canon cameras with APS-C (1.6x) sensors.

Canon AE-1 does not use any of the lenses made after 1988 by Canon.

Look on craigslist for a good Rebel 35 mm camera ... they are usually less than $150 with a standard lens (28-80 mm range)

  4. What you heard is right. The Canon AE1 uses the old FD mount and is not compatible with todays cameras. Canon changed to the EOS system in 1987. Any camera made from then on will work. Basically any Canon autofocus camera. Some cameras to look at would be any of the Canon Rebel film cameras or the Elan 7. Here is a link with a couple examples. I would look on Craigslist in your area first though. It is best to be able to see the camera before you buy it.
