Do you have to go to college or a school to be a firefighter? and do you have to be at a certain height to be a firefighter?

My height's 5 foot 2 inches tall.....might as well call me monte mouse. Alot of guys I see that are firefighters are at least over 5 foot 6 that worries me a bit some if you have to be tall enough.

  1. Each department will have specific requirements. You're best bet is to check with the department you wish to work for and get a list of their requirements.

Here in FL, you attend te academy on our own. Requirements are: 18 yo, valid DL, no felonies or misdemeanors that deter from moral interpreted, HS diploma or GED, pass NFPA 1001 FF physical, and be capable of perform various tasks as assigned by the academy (CPAT).

I'm not aware of any specific height requirement as spelled out in NFPA 1001 Standard for Professional Requirements for Firefighters. The only things they are specific about are the hearing, vision requirements, and weight requirements.

I have trained and worked with FFs as short as 4'11". So it's all dependant upon the FD you work for. Hope this helps.
