A quotation: ''No manicured sand, no lifeguards spotting the rips, no bars, no cold beer, no ice cream, no hotels, no police. Just surf, space, sun, sand, monkeys in the treeline ...''. What exactly are 'rips'? Thank you.

  1. Rips are the places where the water that is pushed in by waves travels back out into the ocean.  Under the water, the sand in the rip area has been washed out and the water is deeper.

Lifeguards spot rips and try to keep swimmers out of them.  Surfers use rips to paddle out quicker without fighting so many breaking waves.  If you are caught in a rip just swim or paddle sideways and you will get past it.

  2. rip currents

  3. I'm guessing Rip Tides in the ocean?
