What's AVI? How do I copy my videos and turn them into AVI?

AVI type has something to do with the videos, but how do I change the video into AVI when I wanna send to my cellphine or to the iPod? Are there any special programms who changes into AVI?

    these are made with windows media maker or any other common movie maker to convert your movie to .avi extension just download a converter to change the current extension to .avi
