  1. Astigmatism-

A visual defect in which the unequal curvature of one or more refractive surfaces of the eye, usually the cornea, prevents light rays from focusing clearly at one point on the retina, resulting in blurred vision.

  2. Hey

an astigmtism is basically an extra power to your prescription.

When someone needs glasses they obviouslt hav a prescription be them short sighted (- prescription used all the time) or long sighted ( + prescription used for close work)

If you are short sighted your eyes focus so that things far away are to big and makes everything look blurry so to correct that a - prescription makes everything smaller which to them makes everything look normal, this corrects their vision.

If you are long sighted you eyes focus so that things close up look too small so a + magnifies close work to make them look normal.

Some people may have a single power prescription

    i.e

    R +4.00

    L +2.75

    or

    R-4.00

    L-2.75

this just means they need things making smaller or bigger.

If someone has an astigmatism this means that the eye is not perfectly spherical and its more rugby ball shaped so another power alongside the first one is used to correct this, astigmatisms cause bluriness aswell as strain which is fixed by the first part of the prescription.

The power that is used fo this also needs to be at a certain degrees  otherwise t will not be clear for you, this could be anythng from 0-180, this depends on where the curve of your eye are etc.

    i.e

    R +4.00 / -0.75 x 154

the first part is to see weather you need is making smaller or bigger, the second part is the power of your astigmatism and the third part is the angle it needs to be at.

some people think that astigmatism is used to correct double vision, but this is wrong, a prism is used to correct double vision,

    hope this helps x
