  9. Running cross country is the act of running a long distance (5k which is 3.1 miles in high school or 8k in college) on a course which is normally not confined to a single track or small area. Cross country is often off-road (though it can be on road too) and does not require any special field or course like track and field events do.

In cross country only the varsity team (normally the top 5-7 runners) are scored. The score you receive is where you come in in the meat (1st, 3rd, 320th, etc.) and the goal of a meet is to have the lowest collective team score possible. Because you race against multiple teams, the only meet that usually matters is region (and state of course). The other meets are simply "practice".

Also, track has a lot of different events while cross country is just running. You two should join. It is very healthy and will make you more likely to stay in good health throughout your life.
