  3. HPV = Human PapillomaVirus

    - It is a sexually transmitted disease very similar to warts.

    - HPV is estimated to be the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States.

    - The purpose of a Pap Smear is to test for the Cancer causing strains of HPV.

    -  It can cause genetically warts

    -  Once infected the virus can remain with the body for the rest of the person's life, it is very hard to get rid of.

    -  The new cervical cancer vaccine is meant to fight some types of HPV.

    According to Wikipedia:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HPV

"A human papillomavirus (HPV) is a papillomavirus that infects the skin and mucous membranes of humans. Approximately 130 HPV types have been identified. Some HPV types cause warts (verrucae) or cancer, while others have no symptoms.

About 30-40 HPV types are typically transmitted through sexual contact and infect the anogenital region. Some sexually transmitted HPV types may cause genital warts, while others do not cause any noticeable signs of infection.

Persistent infection with "high-risk" HPV types — different from the ones that cause warts — may progress to precancerous lesions and invasive cancer. HPV infection is a cause of nearly all cases of cervical cancer.

All HPV types are transmitted by skin-to-skin contact and by inanimate objects.

A cervical Pap smear is used to detect cellular abnormalities. This allows targeted surgical removal of condylomatous and/or potentially precancerous lesions prior to the development of invasive cervical cancer. Although the widespread use of Pap testing has reduced the incidence and lethality of cervical cancer in developed countries, the disease still kills several hundred thousand women per year worldwide. HPV vaccines Gardasil and Cervarix, which block initial infection with some of the most common sexually transmitted HPV types may lead to further decreases in the incidence of HPV-induced cancer....

HPV is estimated to be the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States...

One study found that, during 2003–2004, at any given time, 26.8% of women aged 14 to 59 were infected with at least one type of HPV....

Some HPV infections can cause warts (verrucae), which are noncancerous skin growths. Infection with these types of HPV causes a rapid growth of cells on the outer layer of the skin."

  4. Bettyboo.. gave you a good reference, for the human papilloma virus, usually spread with close especially sexual contact and promiscuous life style, also HPV is a predisposing factor for the development of certain forms of cancer, especially the cancer of the cervix

  5. HPV is a viral infection that can cause warts.  There are many types of HPV, some can cause cervical cancer.  Some just cause warts.  A lot of people have it and never get any symptoms.  It's a hit or miss thing. If people get the warts, they can just be burned off, but they will still have the virus forever and can spread it to others during intercourse.
