  1. Check out the book "How to Adopt Internationally" but make sure you get the most recent edition.  It takes you step by step through the process, including which immigration forms to file when, how to get your fingerprints done, etc.  It also includes a country by country snapshot of the different international programs.  For a general resource to the international adoption process, it's a great book.

I don't know a good deal about Eastern Europe adoptions, as we chose to adopt from a different program.  I believe both programs require the adoptive parents to travel (as opposed to escort) but Russia requires two trips.

    Good luck.

  2. It varies depending on agency. Here's some brief information from http://www.adoptive-parenting.com

    # Russian children are matched with adoptive applicants by regional officials, and are placed directly from childcare institutions. Adoptive parents must travel to Russia to receive and accept their child referral, and then return to finalize their adoptions in the Russian courts. Before travel, adoptive parents will receive basic initial information about the child. Quick Facts: Must be married 1 yr.

    # Boys & girls available

    # Travel in Two trips

    # Sibling groups

    # Infants, toddler, pre-K

    # Single women can adopt

    # Estimated Cost:

    $30,000 to $40,000

    # Timeline: From completion of dossier to referral: girl, 6-18 months; boy, 0-6 months.

Russian Adoption assist families in achieving their dream of parenthood, but also fulfills the dream of orphan children in orphanages and foster homes who await the love of a family.

For more information, support groups and agencies that work in those areas look at www.adoptive-parenting.com

  3. Before you think about the process and the cost, education about adoption itself would be a good place to start. Here are some good links for prospective adoptive parents:
