What's LAX stand for?

I looked up LAX and I'm not sure if it's an acronym or if it stands for something else. I assume "LA" is Los Angeles, but whats the "X".

The X is technically for international. So it is Los Angeles International Airport.

Every Air "port" in the world must have 3 letters to identify it.  Every Air"line" must have 2 letters to identify it.  LAX....L=Los...A=Angelesl...X nothing....it just had to have 3 letters so they added the X.  Some airlines don't every use letters that appear in their name.  For example  HP...is for Southwest airlines.  Go figure.

The X in LAX doesn't stand for anything in particular.  All major airports have a three-letter identifier, and Los Angeles International Airport ended up with LAX.  There is a LA(A-through-Z), many of which have nothing to do with the actual name of the airport.  For instance, LAE is Nadzab Airport in Papua New Guinea.  Wherever possible airport codes are close to the name they represent.  LAX was used because LAI (for Los Angeles International) was already taken by an airport in Serval, France.  Some people think of the X as representing an international crossroads.

Before the 1930s, existing airports used a two-letter abbreviation based on the weather station at the airports. So, at that time, LA served as the designation for Los Angeles International Airport. But, with the rapid growth in the aviation industry, the designations expanded to three letters, and LA became LAX. The letter X does not otherwise have any specific meaning in this identifier. Portland International Airport in Oregon also has a similar code: PDX.
