Know abandoned railbeds cross through mountain ranges

and I've see a few tunnels in my off-road motorcycling. The

longest known to writer had end portions destroyed by explosives after Pearl Harbor as Californians feared tunnel

concealed Japanese agents in hiding. Was able to drive

about 100 feet underground before meeting collapse zone.

  1. The OLD Cascade Tunnel get my vote for abandoned tunnels  at 2.6 miles long.    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cascade_Tun...

There is  a newer tunnel replacing the old,  so trains no longer use it.

  2. Wow. That is scary! How do you know that?

  3. The answer is probably the old Cascade Tunnel on the BNSF between Skykomish and Scenic, Washington.  It was abandoned in 1929 and is now part of a state park.

Try an internet search on "Cascade Tunnel."

  4. Not the longest by any means, but very accessable and a cool hike / bike.  Check out Kettle Valley Railroad.

    Here is one tunnel pic.

  5. Longest, no.  Unique, perhaps.  Don your diving gear and explore any of the railroad tunnels flooded with the filling of Lake Shasta, Ca.

Not a whole lot to see...
