Question:

What's Manchester and the University of Manchester like (academics, athletics, dorms, nightlife, campus...)?

I live in the USA and am seriously considering applying there for a major in anthropology or archaeology (or really any humanity, to be honest). Also, is there a cross country (distance running) team? I've looked at their site and couldn't find anything about one, but it seemed odd because it's such a huge school. And what's Manchester like as a city?

  1. Manchester is England's second city- it's a huge, busy, cosmopolitan place.

English unis don't have dorms- student accommodation is either privately rented (ie shared houses/ flats) or run by the uni (normally only available to first years). Uni accommodation is either halls (corridors connecting a large number of private rooms) or shared flats (about 6 private rooms, sharing a kitchen and living room (sometimes ensuite, sometimes not)).

Manchester's night life is non stop, and the students' union is very good. I go there quite a lot and I'm not even a student in Manchester.

As for the running club, it'll be listed as a society. All their societies are listed here: http://www.umsu.manchester.ac.uk/societi...

To name a few, there's the Anthropology soc, Archaeological soc, Athletic Union, Palaeontology soc, The Gym soc and the International Students soc. I can't see one that's specifically running, though.
