  1. The region number relates to the part of the world you can play it in.

    America is 1, Uk and europe is 2, i dont know 3

    The idea is that you cant sell copies of a dvd that is banned in your own region but is availibe elsewhere. All DVD players have a code in them to read the DVD's, an wont read dvd's with the wrong numbers on them

  3. Region coding for DVDs was devised by the film companies, in order to limit where films were released.  For example, if a film was released in the U.S., you wouldn't be able to play it in a European DVD player, until the European coded version was released (usually several months later...).

    The manufacturers of DVD players didn't like this concept and as a result, almost all DVD players have built in 'hacks', to allow you to make the unit "Region free".  Indeed, most DVD players on sale in Britain today are Region free from new.

    This is the complete list of DVD Regions:

    REGION 1 - U.S., U.S. territories and Canada (American Samoa, Canada, Guam, Palau, Mariana Islands, Marshall Islands, Puerto Rico, Micronesia, United States, U.S. Virgin Islands).
