Question:

What's Stanmore like as a place to live?

I'm coming to Sydney on a long term work visa in a couple of months, and I've been offered the chance to house-sit for at least part of this for some friend's parents in Stanmore. Trouble is, I've never visited that area before, so don't want to commit until I know more about it, transport links, crime, etc; is it a nice area basically??

I'm a single guy in my late 20's, who'd be needing to get to the North Shore to work. My brother has lived in Balmain for a few years, where I've spent most of my time when visiting; any info on how it would compare?

Thanks

  1. Stanmore is a lovely area of the Inner West and is now a gentrified area as such crime is quite low and the neighbourhoods pleasant late Victorian/Federation, it has a rail line which is easy to transfer and Central or Town Hall stn to the Nth Shore line, also buses. Very near Newtown or Leichardt for night life and dining. Biggest problem depending on exactly where could be aircraft noise

  2. You should definitely grab this chance. Stanmore is generally a nice area, and parts of it are very nice (big expensive old houses: hopefully your friend's parents will have one of these). It has a train station and you can walk to Newtown for nightlife and restaurants.

  3. The Inner West is one of the perfect areas in Sydney where crime levels are low and the pricing isn't as high as places such as the North Shore. It is the perfect location for any new home owner if you ask me.

For trains, this area is connected to the Inner West Line (purple on the network map) and transport to Central Station is only a few stops away. Many bus services also operate here.

    Hope this has helped.
