What's Welkom like?

I've been to different places in SA but never Welkom and I know some people there, whats it like?

Terrible.....Welkom is full of common people, really, I have been there once and it was shocking to say the least.

Had to go to the Phakisa Raceway once about 4 years ago; the only thing i remember was the dust storm! Jeez that was terrible! Im sure this still some dust in all our tools and supplies....

But ja, no stop streets, just traffic circles. Thats about the most exciting thing....

Welkom is a mining town, people are a bit rough there, but I have an aunt that lives there. There is not much to do there really. Most people have motorbikes and race them at night, very boring.

I used to go there during school holidays because we got temps at the mines.....It's just an ordinary place, like most of the Free State dorpies.....but second biggest after Bloemfontein.......you can drive through the CBD within five minutes at 20kph.......the last time I was there (about three years ago) the was still no mall...and all the shops are closed by 14:00 on Saturday.....and the area resemble a quiet grave side.....and yes, there are no traffic lights, only circles....you'd get so confused if you don't know how these work.....

The people I find usually very nice and their conversations interesting are not so nice today. Why ? I lived in Welkom for a while as my husband worked there. (No he did not work for the mines, he is a doctor). I cried when we moved there and I cried when we left. We had wonderful times there and made dear friends. As in all other places, even overseas where we live today, the people who stand out are not necessarily representative of how All the people are in that place.

Go and visit your friends and they will show you the right places to visit and you will meet more lovely people. I was there during the tornado and it was touching to see how the people reached out to help each other.Please keep in mind that a lot of mines closed down and people lost their jobs -they need us to have positive messages for them.

Kak, I wouldn't want to stay there. I have noticed that in SA, the nicer the meaning of the name the worse the place!

1. Grassy Park

2. Lansdowne

3. Manenberg (moon and mountain)

4. Alexandria

5. Eldorado Park

6. Hillbrow (sounds posh, could be in England)

7. Paradys in the Cape

8. Welkom (booooooooooooring)

etc etc

Of course the worst place of all is Boksburg...LOL!!!!

Welcome to Welkom and enjoy your stay. no traffic lights, only circles, that's rather unique for a big town, for the rest, a rather new mining town with nothing really spectacular.

The birds around there fly inverted as there is nothing much going on on the ground.

There is not much to to there. There people from there are all miners and have different views than the rest of the world. There is a small road between 2 shopping areas and every Saturday night everyone goes there to "drag race" ( from city golfs, minis, cars from the 40's and whatever is in town). The woman are loose as h**l or should I say easily vertically accessible if you ask me. Oh ye there is a casino.
