Question:

What's Wrong With My Bike?

I have a Briggs and Stratton 306 cc. (I accidentally said 302 in another question) 1-speed, automatic clutch motorcycle. To get it to start, you have to put lots of gas in the carb, and put it on half choke. Once its started, you have to keep it on half choke, while pushing the throttle a little. If you mess with the choke, or let off the throttle lower than a certain point, it will die. It also doesn't have the power it should, and bogs down alot. If you go fast, and then slow down kinda quick, it will die. Why does this happen? How do I fix this?

  1. +1 on checking the diaphragm on fuel pump, rubber tends to crack with age. Also, you probably need to clean the carb. On engines that don't run very often, lawnmowers, etc, the tiny fuel tubes get plugged with precipitated fuel solids. Run some carb cleaner or acetone through it, if that doesn't work you may need to dismantle, then clean it.

  2. Bad Diaphragm in the Carb. Nothing will change until You get that fixed.

  3. B&S engines get gas into the carbertor by a diaghram pump.  It is not uncommon for this membrane to develop holes and not pump correctly.  A good lawn mower repair center should be able to help you troubleshoot and repair the motor.

  4. It needs a tune up, badly. Take it to a local motorcycle mechanic, or because it has a Briggs engine in it, a place that services yard equipment. Get it fully serviced (tuneup, oil change, new filters and spark plug) because it sounds like it probably needs it. Then ride it like you stole it!
