I was babysitting yesterday when the children decided to watch a show called "Total Drama Island." One of the cartoon characters was a home schooler but he was also made out to be a sexist jerk! What's your opinion?

  1. I was homeschooled k-12 and I would definitely recommend it as long as you also get the kids out and interacting with other people through sports or clubs. I also think getting them in to at least a couple traditional classes is a good idea, I'd say try enrolling them in a 100 level class or below in a university. I'm now attending a very good liberal arts college and I think that my homeschooling background has really helped me adjust to and succeed at college.

  2. I home schooled my two sons for 13 years. They are in college now. One is a first semester sophomore and one is a second semester sophomore. They are both in the national honor society at their college. They were well prepared for college both academically and socially. I think homeschooling is a great thing for kids and offers a lot of family time also. We remain a very close family.

  3. Okay, so the homeschooled character was a sexist jerk. It's not real.

I know a homeschooled sexist jerk, and I still support homeschooling.

People will raise their kids the way they themselves were raised. You don't see too many people being raised as Catholics and coming out Jains, do you? So, by that logic, sexist parents will raise sexist kids; school has nothing to do with it.

  4. As the skeptic said, there are plenty of sexist people in public schools. Many of them are the teachers/principals. And jerks? The world is full of them. It's unfortunate that media still relies so heavily on stereotypes to make a buck. Oddly though, usually the homeschool stereotype is the nerd who can't socialize.

I am for homeschooling, I homeschool with my children.

  5. Taken from Wiki:

"Ezekiel:voted off: A homeschooled sexist who doesn't get out much. He's having a hard time getting along with everybody (especially with his female teammates) and master teen speak because of this socially isolated background."

Interesting Biblical name, sexist, isolated background... guess cartoon network is stereotyping all homeschoolers to be like this character. Im sure there are some that fit this description but more that dont. And most ppl really dont 'know' homeschooling families, they assume they are that family of 14 kids, girls wearing dresses, never leave the house except for church, cult-like clan you see come to town once or twice a year.

To be honest, Cartoon Network sucks, terrible terrible shows, I would rather my kids watch the Simpsons.

Oh, and my opinion of home schooling? Well, I plan on home schooling my kids again this year so...

  6. When you home school one of the advantages to the family is they can teach certain beliefs and values without others putting in their opinion. I am sure some people will not always teach them the best things to believe in. The benefits in my opinion is that I can prepare my kids for a real life. Not only will they learn their lessons but they will also learn to budget, save, cook, clean, etc. When you homeschool there is no limit to what you can teach your children, where as in public school they are on a set schedule and in Elementary school only basic subjects are taught. My daughter in 3rd grade was passed by the school even though she failed the only two main subjects in that grade. She supposedly needed help because she couldn't read b ut since she wasn't diagnosed with a learning disability they could not help her. The next year with no help over the summer at all she was on the A-B honor roll until I took them out of school. My son is smart as can be, made a 100 on the 5th grade TAKS test. He was made fun of because he was smart, he thought it was bad to be smart. The principal told my husband that some kids would get picked on and there is nothing you can do. He was being pinned against a wall by some kids while they tried to get some others to beat him up. The school didn't care. I took my kids out the last 6 weeks of school and they gained more confidence in that time than I would have ever thought. You as an adult know how the comments of one person can harm you for a long time when you are a child, imagine having to deal with kids being mean all the time. I don't care who you are at some point another kid is mean to you. That's the way school is. The parents may not like their kids watching that. There are alot of cartoons that my kids don't watch. Homeschooling is an advantage that most kids could benefit from. In the first 2 days I had my kids home they learned their spanish alphabet. I took them out on a whim, irritated at the school, and had no plans yet so I made them learn some spanish while I got things together. I also made them go back and learn some things they weren't made to learn. In our school it is mandatory they write in cursive by 5th grade but the school didn't teach it like they were supposed to. So they have to finish learning that. They don't tell you your child is supposed to know it until 4th grade starts and then they tell you they were supposed to learn it in 3rd grade. So in my opinion homeschooling has many advantages over public. Not to mentio morehands on learning and getting to pick your own feild trips. Hope that info helps.

  7. There are very few depictions of positive home schooling experiences in the media. (that is the entertainment media.)

And to refer to the comment about the person who would rather watch the "Simpsons", sorry, I know it is a horrible show at the best of times but it totally trashes homeschooling. They did a show on "Cletus", the hillbilly hick. He homeschools his kids, and goes on to reveal how utterly ignorant they all are, the parents and the children. It was pretty horrible.

"The Astronaut Farmer" gave a pretty good example about how homeschoolers can accomplish great things, and RV also gave the homeschool kids some credibility.

I think it is pretty sad how homeschoolers are stereotyped.

  8. I think they don't live in the real institutionalized world! Welcome to the real world!

YOU ARE NOT SPECIAL ( your teacher is not yours she is the classes)

YOU ARE NOT UNIQUE ( there are probably tons of people just like you)

FOR ALL YOU KNOW YOUR PARENTS COULD BE LYING TO YOU! THEY ARE NOT ALWAYS RIGHT NOR DO THEY ALWAYS DESERVE YOUR RESPECT! ( it seems to me that when the parents is the authority figure all day it affords them way too much respect) THEY DO NOT HAVE KNOWLEDGE IN ALL FIELDS OF ACADEMICS PROBABLY!

The sooner or later you realize these things the better off u will be!

  9. I have homeschooled my kids for 12 years now and know the families of countless others who homeschool. We come from all walks of life. Almost every attempt Hollywood has made to depict homeschoolers has been way off base. Either we are shown as brainiacs who speak seven languages and the kids have Ph.Ds by the time they are sixteen (but have no social skills) or we are depicted like what you saw, as some kind of deviant who probably got kicked out of public school and homeschooling was the parent's only option. I have personally met a few kids that fall into the second category. BUT, what is really aggravating is that most kids that fall into the second category are in the public schools. Hollywood just wants to try to cast homeschoolers in a negative light. Yet we should be tolerant of shows that depict public schooled teenagers involved in s*x/pregnancy, drug and alcohol abuse, violence, disobedience to authority, etc....and accept that as normal teenage behavior? Hollywood always has a hidden agenda, always. In reality, homeschoolers outperform their peers academically, don't usually fall into the negative peer influeneced behaviors and generally have more respect for adults. There are always exceptions, but don't let Hollywood tell you what to think about homeschoolers because it is biased and faulty.

  10. I homeschool my three children, so obvioulsy I am for it.

The cartoon is just a cartoon, its not real life. Real homeschoolers come in all different personalities, beliefs, political affiliations, religions, income levels, etc. So if you look hard enough you might find a homeschooler who is a sexist jerk, but that won't be what you find in the majority of homeschooling families.

I really don't know what "The Skeptic" did to deserve all those thumbs down. He is against homeschooling, and he has a right to that opinion. I think it is admirable that he did not latch on to a stereotype or misconception just because he is against homeschooling. Rather, he stated that not all are the same. What is wrong with that?
