The Bills were named after "Buffalo Bill" Cody

It was the result of a naming contest...the AAFC team we had in Buffalo in the late 40s had that nickname as well and when the Bills were founded as part of the AFL in 1959, a naming contest was held and they decided to stick with that same name

the team is named after buffalo bill who was a famous western hero who was known for killing bison. strange but true. the name was a result of a contest i think. but the mascot itself is a bison.
