  1. A line is synonymous with a trunk. The telephone line (JK cable) is 4 conductor and in the US is color coded Red,Green,Yellow and Black. The Red and Green are used for the tip and ring and in some cases the other pair was used to supply a different voltage for such things as remote ringers and light power for the Princes line of phones. It also is used to supply a second trunk (or phone line) with line 1 on the Red/Green pair and the second line on the Yellow/Black pair.

A line in the context of a telephone is a pair of copper wires which extends from the user's location to the company's premises.  A telephone land line has a defined upper limit of bandwidth of 4 kHz, but can carry signals at higher frequencies if the distance is not too great: such signals are used for DSL.
