  1. The definition of a Mary-Sue is a term used to describe a fictional character who plays a major role in the plot and is particularly characterized by overly idealized and clichéd mannerisms, lacking noteworthy flaws, and primarily functioning as wish-fulfillment fantasies for their authors.

    Synonym: Bella Swan

Also see: Gary Stu, Edward Cullen

  2. A Mary-Sue is an idealized version of the author themselves. they are good looking, talented, and everything else that the writer wishes that they could be. basically, a self-insert.

because of that, they are often under-developed unrealistically perfect, and the reader finds themself disliking mary-sue because she is so...well, perfect.

fan fiction is particularly guilty of this. if you'd like to see some traits that could possibly be part of a mary-sue, try this mary-sue litmus test:

also, look up the wikipedia article. it's pretty good.

    the male version is gary-stue.

    anyways, hope i helped!

  3. It's a character that's pretty much all around perfect.

The male version of that is a Gary Stu.
