What's a better way to survive the next depression: Joining the military or moving to another country?

Also, which countries would be good to move to? I'm thinking maybe Japan?

  1. Assuming you're American, I doubt joining the military would be the best bet.  Depending on the makeup of the next US government the possible futures are significant budget cuts or significant deployment in unpleasant countries abroad.

    Again, assuming American, I'd try for Alberta (Canada) as your place to hide out.  High oil prices help their economy a lot, and the culture will be similar to what you're used to (no need to learn a new language, for example)


  2. Japan's economy is strongly tied to other first world nations and they've been in a recession. They have issues with homeless and companies closing. Your best defense might be to gain skills in areas that always need workers. Perhaps healthcare, science teachers, or something to do with death and taxes. Trying to survive in your own country might be easiest because you don't have to pay to move abroad, you don't have to fight for a work visa, you know the local area and language already, you have probably more contacts in your home country than other countries, etc.
