Question:

What's a creative, yet inexpensive, way to decorate my fireplace?

I have never and will never use my fireplace for it's intended purpose, but with my small apartment, I think I can use it for decorative space. I always see people put candles in their fireplace, which is nice, but a little cliche now.

Any other suggestions?

  1. What's your idea of "inexpensive'? Less than a few dollars or just under $100?.

One idea is to go to an antique shop and look for a pair of andirons - depending on your area they may be cheap and easy to find. Then, you can set them up with a couple of (real) logs.

Another idea is to get a fake log set - these can do anything from just glow to providing actual heat (electric) with simulated flames but they can be pretty expensive....

  3. on my fire place i know u didnt want candles at least i think u didnt but anyway on my fire place i have a mirrer with diffrent size candles holders. it looks really nice and around christmas time u gan put garland on the mantle and let it drape over the sides and twist in some lights its really pretty

  4. My mom makes really cute Wreaths out of fake flowers from the Dollar Stores! they dont have to be JUST round, you can buy a dollar Vase and but some fake flowers and decrotae the vase beutifully and cheap! :)

  5. well depends on what u are into, you can go to the local thrift/craft store and find stuff for the season, your hero...but your best place to do this is to buy materials in small bulk and craft them your self..i my self do have a fire place but i do have a make shift mantle and i decorate it in stuff like..what my kids make and the choices  are endless just use your imagination

  6. You can put a large plant in the fireplace opening & hang crystal drops on the limbs. If you hide a low watt light behind the plant, the effect is quite lovely.

You can get a similar effect by putting crooked small bare branches in a large low basket. Either leave them natural or spray them a glossy color, hang the crystal drops on the branches and it looks magical and modern at the same time with the light behind it.

Or, you can get a decorative folding screen to go in front of the opening. You can even make a folding screen out of a 4' X 4' sheet of masonite. Cut it into 3 equal pieces and glue a thin layer of sheet foam on one side. Then cover the foam with a fabric to coordinate with the room and staple the raw edges at the back. Attach small hinges to the back side about 6" from the top and bottom of each panel. Now you have an inexpensive folding screen.

The other option is to paint the panels and glue an attractive print to the center of each one. You can edge the print and the borders of the panels with a coordinating upholsterer's braid trim, if you like. Add the hinges and voila!!

    Good luck!! : )
