  1. "Middle class" has a different meaning in San Francisco, where the median price for a home is $790,000, and rent on a studio apartment starts at around $1,000.

You could check out the Avenues (Richmond and Sunset districts) or the Mission/Bernal Heights areas.  If your problem with the Castro is that you don't want to be around g*y people, too bad; you're going to see them/be around them everywhere.

  2. If you're looking for an arty, nightlife-y neighborhood, go for the Mission (west of Valencia St if you're keen to avoid "the ghetto," as you put it).  It's a lot easier to find a share there than your own apartment, though, if you have budget constraints.  An average 1br in the Mission goes for around $2k, depending on what street it's on and the condition it's in.  The Nob Hill/Pacific Heights area would work if you were in range of Polk Street (I'd stick north of Geary Blvd if you go this route), and it's cheaper.

*The* place to look for places to live, apartments or shares, is craigslist, bar none.  I've found every place I've ever lived in this city there, and there's a very wide selection.

  3. Why not the Castro district ?

  4. mission district can be slightly ghetto in some parts, however they have a great hipster scene.

the sunset and the richmond are more family living, but its peaceful and nice there.

noe valley is slightly pretentious but also slightly artsy.

near castro is church and market, and that is a charming area to live, close to all the action.

  5. The Mission or Potrero Hill

  6. Why would you single out the Castro as a place to avoid?

sounds kinda strange? Also the artist/musician type areas are not the middle class areas here. The middle class areas would probably be The Richmond district and Ocean beach/Avenues area, remember SF prides itself on welcoming all kinds of people. That being said you will find people of all types in all areas of SF. So you might want to reconsider moving here.

  7. The middle class bit would be SOMA or North beach but of the artistic bit I'd say Castro.

  8. Middle class would be Sunset and Richmond those these aren't artist/musician areas.

  9. The Richmond
