I'm a photographer and photo-editor, a novice at 3D graphics. I want to make photo-real space art and stuff like that. What do you think would be a good buy?

  3. If you become good at Maya, you'll begin to see how much better it is than 3ds max, but it's very difficult to learn. More than even 3ds max, which had quite a steep learning curve as well. So if you really set on getting either of them, or something else like Lightwave or Cinema4d, download the demos first and see for yourself.

Also, be forewarned, there comes a steep price tag to any one of applications. The commercial versions of Maya and 3ds max run upwards of a thousand dollars. But the student version comes at a much more reasonable two hundred or so.

  4. Maya 8

  5. Blender is a great free program for 3D modelling/animation.
