Question:

What's a good American or Japanese made bicycle?

Hello. I am looking to buy a new bicycle, as the one I have no longer fits me (I'm 13, and I haven't rode the bike since I was 11). I think a hybrid (mountain + urban) bicycle would be the best for me, as I want to ride it on pavement, but the area I live in is very hilly. Despite that fact, I also want to be able to use it in the city, where it's flatter.

Besides being a hybrid, I want to be made and engineered in either the United State of America or Japan; as I want something of very high quality. I'd prefer to keep the cost under 250$, but if it is slightly more, I'd consider it.

One more question: Are bicycle seats interchangeable / can I buy replacement seats? I would rather focus on the frame, and the performance of the bike, rather than the seat, first. But, I still want to be able to use a comfortable seat, as this bike will be used as my primary transportation (most likely several miles each way, and I would go several miles often)

Thanks,

Ryan Leaf

  1. First I own two bikes (Cannondale and Trek) and I have not researched as thoroughly as others here.  But to my knowledge.  The Cannondale I own has several stickers all over the bike and the American flag on the paint and they claim that it is American made.  My Trek is "supposed" to be American made but I would not bet on it.  I would also encourage to check out FUJI which also claims to be American made but the name is a little suspicious.

  2. my Specialized Stumpjumper and Giant TCR Composite are both high-end bikes, engineered in the US and built to high standards in Taiwan. don't fool yourself about where bikes are built = the quality of the bike. fact is most bikes are built in Giant's factories in Taiwan and Mainland China. the differences are, reputable brands (Giant, Specialized, Trek, etc.) have quality control standards. most bikes made in the US are high-end, independent frame builders. you will not find a US built bike for $250. well maybe a used one that's at least 10 years old. definitely not a hybrid. those came about after most manufacturing went overseas. don't want to believe that? check out this link, an article about where bikes are actually from, including high-end european brands:

as to your saddle, when you have your bike fitted at the bike shop, they will help you with all aspects, including what's the right seat.

  3. Unfortunately there are no bikes made in the U.S. although there are some that are assembled from Asian parts. You wouldn't be able to touch a Japanese bike for under $800.

I suggest that you ignore where the bike was made and go to your local bike shop. Explain your needs and budget and they'll fix you up.

  4. first of all the best bike brand is actually Canadian (norco) and if your looking for a bike that cheap your not gonna get a good one you need to at lest pay 1000
