Question:

What's a good FURRY pet for a college student?

Hi!

I'm going into my second year of college and living in an apartment. I've been going thru some rough times in my life, and have made the decision to get a pet!

I LOVE pets (have shih-tzus at my house) and UNLIKE MOST COLLEGE STUDENTS, will NOT BE NEGLECTFUL to any pet that I get!

I'm pretty sure a dog/cat is too big, loud and possibly annoying to my roommates lol.

Is there any pet (maybe bunny?) that is cute and furry but a bit smaller than a dog/cat? Something with PERSONALITY and cuteness but not big or loud???

Thank you :)

  1. When I went to school a lot of the pre-vet students had chinchilla's they were really cute and different.  But I think a bunny would be good.  Anything in a cage must be cleaned often though which is one job I always hated so best of luck to you.

Here is a link to a site about chinchillas: http://exoticpets.about.com/cs/chinchill...

I just thought I would add I love Rex rabits they have some of the softest fur! Dwarfs are also cute!

  2. Hamsters cost between 10 and 20 dollars.  The dwarf type only need a small cage which is perfect for a dorm room. Maintaining them is very easy on a full schedule and fairly cheap.  The only drawback is that they are night animals.  I put mine in the tub so he can run on his wheel all night and I can still sleep. They can learn things as well mine comes when you call him and if you give him a whole walnut he prances around carrying it in mouth like it is a trophy. Getting a ball for it can be fun so you can watch him explore your home.

  3. If your going to be at college a lot and maybe not have a lot have time, do not get a bunny, they need lots of attention and time with there owner, maybe a hamster. If, however you will able to spend lots of time maybe a bunny will be good.

    Good Luck.

  4. well first it depends how long you want the pet to live

    rabbit 8-14 years

    ginneipig 4-6 years

and how much you want to spend on this pet though it's life time.

    rabbit about $8,000.00

    ginneipig about $6,000.00

but you should get i rabbit because they can be potty trained, they like to play with you, and when you are gone they find something to play with.

plus they are low upkeep. just change the cage every 1 to 2 weeks and change the water every day.

now you heard my side. you pick.

  5. I would get something small and doesnt cost a lot of money. This way you can get a feel for having a pet and what not.

Who ever said Ferret should not of. For college people they are not good pets. Right now you can find so many people getting rid of them b/c they dont have the time since they are in college.

I think a rat/hamster/mouse would be good to start out with.

If you get any pet think of adopting. But if you buy try a petco. If in the first 15 days of purcase your pet gets sick or has a problem (b/c most animals from petstore have something) they have topay for all vet costs. But you have to use the Vet they go to. They dont normally tellpeople that even though they are suppose to.

  6. a ferret or a bird that would be real good or get an hamster or gerbil!

  7. Guinea pig, hampster, bunny, rat, mouse...go to your local pet store to see what animals they have :)

  8. I would defiantely go for a bunny. They are very social & smart & are really like cats & dogs. They can be taught tricks & also come to their name. They are wonderful apartment animals since the really don't require much space like a cat or dog, but their cage may take up a little room. Rabbits sure do have personality. They all have their own minds & their own unique habits & traits. They sure are cute too! I have never seen one un-cute bunny.

  9. Rabbits are a good pet to have going threw hard times. They will bighten up your day. There fun, small, easy and so funny and cute!

  10. get a bunny. they are so cute and playful, and they arnt big. i love the holland lop breed. its a medium sized breed, but they are very curious and calm.

  11. An abyssinian guinea pig is good. They are fun to pet and their cage doesn't smell. You can give them fresh vegetables, guinea pig pellets, and timothy hay. They purr went you pet them and give them food. They also squeak for food. Also, they don't bite.

  12. I think you could buy a grapefruit at the grocery store, draw on eyes and a mouth with a felt pen, and keep it as a pet.

  13. In my opinion, the next closest thing to a dog or cat is a rabbit. I was never allowed to have a dog or cat growing up, so bunnies were the next best thing. Seven years after bringing my first one home, I'm now breeding and showing professionally because I loved them so much.

Rabbits are GREAT pets for college students (I am one). I'd suggest the Holland Lop breed, which is what I have. It is a dwarf breed and their maximum show weight is 4 lbs., so they don't get very big. Holland Lops are cute and have a puppy-dog-like appearance that makes them irresistable.

I'd also suggest a buck over a doe. Bucks tend to be more friendly and outgoing, my boys are my "favorites" in the barn (but don't tell the girls!). My boys follow me around like puppies and give me kisses when I open the doors of their cages to feed them.

    Good luck!
