  1. Just have them paint on a blank sheet of paper using their own expression and creativity.

  2. Self Portrait: have lots of mirrors and different tones of pencils, paint or whatever you choose...this way the children are exploring persona, social and emotional development (such as self-esteem, exploring themselves etc) as well as linking to a topic.

Mona Lisa is famous for her smile-how about an activity that encourages thinking such as in circle time asking them-"what made her smile?" then you can go on to what makes them smile...take smily photos...can be extended to talk about other emotions and maybe make an emotions display...after all ALL emotions are valid even sad ones!

Painting in general: maybe have out differenet painting tools eg: toothbrushes as well aspaintbrushes, add texture to paint such as sand, cornflour etc. Children can make their own paintings.

  3. Let them pair up with their friends and then make there own mona Lisa of their best friends.

  4. i did color by number with a pre-school class i worked with, with a similiar activity..

  5. Get color safe food that they can glue on board to make there own Mona Lisa..like elbow noodles as the face and cut black construction paper for the hair and red licorice for the lips..ect.
