Question:

What's a good age to potty train a boy?

My son will turn 2 in October and was wondering what a good age is to start potty training him? A woman I work with mentioned her 16 month old son is learning. I thought that was early but every parent is different- as well as every child.

Any ideas?

  1. My son is 2 and a half and we are working on it with him.  He still pees his pants about half the time and he's never pooped on it so I dunno about how long it'll take.  My older son was 4 before he was completely potty trained and my daughter was only about 30 months so I guess every kid is different and boys take longer than girls.  Good luck to you and happy potty training!!!

  2. When they are ready.  They must be able to stay dry for 2 hrs, communicate to you that they have to potty, be able to pull his pants down and up on his own and comprehend what you are wanting from him.  The average age for a male child is 3 1/2-4  years before they are pottytrained.  Little ones have very small weak bladders and to be pottytrained they need to be able to hold it longer otherwise you are in the bathroom every 30 minutes just to try to keep them dry.  Most children that are pottytrained before age 2 will end up going backwards around age 3-4 and start having accidents again.  Also before age 3 their bladders can rarely ever hold out for 2 hrs.

  3. Start when he begins to display potty readiness:

Wants diaper changed right away - may even tell you he is about to go in the diaper

Goes to a corner or another room to p**p in the diaper (indicates wanting privacy)

Interest in following you into the bathroom when you are going

Can understand/communicate bathroom words (potty, peepee, etc.)

    Can follow simple directions

    Can pull pants off/on

Stays dry for at least 2 hours and/or wakes up dry after nap

Most kids show readiness anywhere from 18 months - 3 years, though occasionally a bit earlier or later  :)

  4. I started by including the kids in my bathroom breaks. Either keep the door open or bring 'im in with ya and explain what's goin on. Any books or movies will encourage them also.  Never force, scold or punish your child during any part of the potty training process. Most kids bladders aren't even well-developed enough by age 3 to potty train. My son was slowly integrated into using the potty. His little sister progressed faster just because she's a girl and saw her big brother and mommy goin all the time and just wanted to be a part of it all. If you play your cards right your child will start using on his own accord and be more proud of himself than you could ever imagine. GOOD LUCK

  5. My husband started my son at 18 months and it was going could, but my husband got lazy.  So I started again around 2 1/2 years.  It took a long while for him but he's there now.  First I had to introduce him to the potty, a little a big one.  We had cartoons and videos about it to make it fun.  As time went on I introduced new things so he can slowly to give him time to learn.  Kids learn as slow or fast as they want.  I think it would be a good idea to start and see how it goes. Good Luck.

  6. Around age 2.

  7. 2 is a good age to start introducing the potty chair and pottying in general.  I work with preschool children and have found children vary widely in age for readiness in potty training! Make potty training fun like aiming at cheerios and sinking them, children pick up on fun things - if your son doesn't seem interested yet then just hold off for a few months and try again.  don't push it too much or it'll become a burden!  Good luck and have fun!
