A "unique" manga would be Claymore. Its type of drawing is different from the usual anime-ish type. It even comes in anime form.

And a relatively new anime in the US is Code Geass (In Japan, the 2nd season has already been playing). Code Geass is awesome because it is part Gundam and part Deathnote. It is set into the near future where there are Gundam-like mechas, but the storyline is kind of like Deathnote, because the main character is trying to rebel against the Emperor, who is his father, by becoming a rebel leader and then a whole bunch of killing and revolutionizing begins.

Bleach is cool, too.
