What's a good bike I can get around $100? Also I'm very new to bikes, what kind of specs/components should I look for when buying a bike? And can explain what those components mean?

thanks so much

  1. a 4+ year old entry level bike shop quality bike.

there are as many different types of bikes as riders. unfortunately, $100 won't even get you a "better" POS from WALLYWOOD. I suggest that you go to a few independent bike shops, to get a feel for the different types of bikes (so you can decide what will suit you), get properly sized for a bike, and get a reality check on pricing (I can be a sarcastic SOB, but today I'm really meaning that in a nice way). next, I'd suggest you can  either take your new knowledge, and peruse the classifieds, craigslist, ebay, etc, for a used bike. or decide what price range and bike shop you are comfortable with, and get a new bike. there are certainly benefits to buying a new bike at your LBS: manufacturer's warranty (void if sold on-line, through a big box chain, or second hand), service (all bikes need tune-ups. most shops offer at least one tune-up, some a year, and a handful offer lifetime tune-ups), expertise of the staff, and a connection to the cycling community.

when looking at new bikes, the componentry will be somewhat consistent within various price ranges. I would suggest for your fist bike, purchase a quality frame with solid entry level components. they actually tend to be a bit more durable, than their lighter race ready brethren! as you get into the sport, you will start swapping out parts, or even upgrade your entire bike.

    happy hunting..
