I need some advice on what kind of bike is best for getting to school and around town in terms of reliability and other things. Is a mountain bike good enough?

  1. It really depends on where you are riding. If you are riding on all roads, you probably want something with slick tires (like what you find on a road bike). If you are riding in gravel and dirt, you probably want something with knobby tires (generally what you find on a mtn bike) If you are going up hills, you want something lighter, but if you are going flat, it doesn't really matter too much.

If you want to have the option to ride places other than to school and back, like off road, you need to keep that in mind too. I own 4 bikes because I like to ride all over the place :)

They have hybrid bikes that are usually perfect for commuting. They can have shocks in front and shocks in the seat for comfort. They are usually easy to fit racks and fenders to. (If you are riding to school, I highly suggest getting those so you don't get mud and water all over yourself if it rains)

Trek makes a whole line of bikes called the Soho that is supposed to be for commuting. Some of the Sohos come with a rubber strip along the top tube that is like a bumper to protect against scratches.

If you are going for cheap, find whatever bike you like that fits your budget and go buy new tires for it. Tires that don't have knobbs roll better on the pavement, and the higher the pressure you can put in them, the faster you can go because of less rolling resistance.

No matter what you get, you want something that fits and something that is comfortable, if it's not enjoyable to ride, you won't ride it. Too many people spend too much money on a bike that isn't comfortable and it ends up living in the garage.

  2. Mountain bike = truck

Can do, will do, but lots more energy used to haul around.

Race bike = race car. Not so great for casual use.

The ideal bike is a commuter bike. Often these are comfort bikes (1/2 between road and mountain bikes) with all the accessories to safely and comfortably commute.

  3. Specialized P3!!!!

    (Thats what i got :p)

  4. A mountain bike is the best to take you around town, from all the different bikes I've rode, but don't go too nice or it's likely it'll get stolen. Unless... http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-k...
