Something that is interesting, with a hook, that'll keep me interested in reading. Possibly something with meaning, nothing political.

  1. 1984 George Orwell

  2. I can't recommend Kurt Vonnegut's books enough. If you want to know why he is considered the best American satirist of all time, you might want to start with Slaughter-House Five. It's an intelligent book, but still accessible to casual readers. You won't be disappointed.

  3. James Patterson books.

    Roses are Red.

    Violets are Blue.

    When the Wind Blows

    The Lakehouse.

  4. Try;

    Jeffrey Deaver:

    The Bone Collector

    The Vanished Man

    The Devil's Teardrop

    John Irving:

    The World According to Garp

    A Prayer for Owen Meany

    The Cider House Rules

    They're all great.

    Enjoy!

  5. Michael Crichton's (he wrote Jurassic Park)novels are great. My favorite is Next, which describes the current genetics industry...absolutely fascinating, and horrifying.

  6. My son (20) loves R.A. Salvatore's books featuring Drizzt. (I've read and liked them as well)

They are fantasy novels but are so well written they are believable. His characters have amazing depth. R.A. Salvatore writes with real incite into human strengths, shortcomings and motivations. I believe the first book is the Silver Shard. He didn't write the books in chronological order so that is up to debate. I suggest going to his website.

  7. Check out The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova and The Host by Stephenie Meyer.

  8. Try some of these:

Neil Gaiman is an amazing author! Any of his books are good. Try Neverwhere first.

Edgar Allen Poe is a really good author. Check out his poems and short stories.

His Dark Materials trilogy (The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass) by Philip Pullman

The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien

Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling

The Sight and Fell by David Clement-Davies

Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom

    Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton

    The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

  9. Killing Floor by Lee Child - the first in his thriller series. He definitely hooks ya, and there's meaning to his books, though it's subtle. You'll see what I mean if you read this. He hooked me - this wasn't the kind of thing I'd normally pick up.

Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson - very thought-provoking in a number of ways, but also funny and absorbing if you can get past the hokey first few pages. I guess it's the king daddy of cyberpunk books, but it's just a cool vision of America's future & other things. You'll be hooked by page 8, I'd bet.
