What's a good brand of banjo?

My son plays guitar and now is interested in playing banjo. He wants a four string, but beyond that we don't know what type he should look at. Thought it would be good to ask people who have nothing to gain if you know what I mean. t

Thanks so much!

  1. Is he sure he wants a 4-string?  Those are used almost entirely for strumming chords in Dixieland jazz, or flatpicking fiddle tune melodies in traditional Irish music.

if he wants to play bluegrass, most other kinds of folk music, or old-time music, he almost certainly wants a 5-string.

Gold Tone and Deering are two well respected name brands that build both 4 and 5 string models ranging from beginner to professional quality instruments.

  2. Both are excellent brands.  Just stay away from the lowest priced brands (like Rogue).  Deering's "Goodtime" banjo is probably the most popular of the starter banjos.

  3. Hi

Here is the best site for banjos. You can select from BlueGrass to Fold to whatever.

I recommend this site for its complete line of 4 and 5-string banjo.
