What's a good city in America that's fit as a setting of a story?

I'm starting to write a story, just for fun.

It needs to be where there are alot of kids that are sons and daughters of big companies or just...rich..

I don't want it to be too suburby....and not too city-ish...

But it can be a place where it's close to a big city.

Just...somewhere that's a good setting.

  1. salem mass. comes to mind.

  2. so cal

  3. The hamptons, Long Island! Trust me, there are a lot of rich kids and it's and its beautiful. It's not suburban though its a woodsy/beachy kinda place. It's right on the water, and not too far from NYC.

  4. Cohassett  ,Ma. it's a beautiful town south of Boston on the ocean. The "common"was pictured in the movie witches of eastwick,so was the church where the feathers and cherries came out of Jack N.s mouth. Also the Goldie Hawn movie housesitter was filmed in Cohassett

  5. In most of the Stephen King stories I have read, he makes his own city. The ones he uses in maine, to my knowledge are fictitious. So, make up your own city, then it can be any where you want, and have any characteristics that you want. But it can be  a suburb of an existing city.

I would start by drawing a map of a neighborhood.  From the description you are looking for, the city would have to be perfect.

I did a search of gated communities, and it yielded about 10 pages of information.

If you do use and existing city, and fudge the facts, some one might challenge you?

Good luck...I hope I have helped.

  6. NYC Suburbs just over the line.  While you've got a ring of gritty high density cities like Yonkers, Jersey City and Mount Vernon bordering New York City, within another 5-10 miles you've got very wealthy villages like Bronxville, Scarsdale, Larchmont in Westchester County NY (Rockefeller's backyard), Glen Cove and Oyster Bay on *the "gold coast" of northern Long Island (Gatsby country), Alpine, NJ, etc.  You've a major corporate presence both in NYC and in the 'I-287' ring around the city, with these rich enclaves located in between.  The demographics of (largely white) wealth of these communities and the nearby poverty (predominantly minority - but a constantly changing mix of minorities) creates a tension that could provide an interesting backdrop for a story about the sons and daughters of the rich and famous.
