  1. You might check out the Dodge Caliber. I have a 2008 and I love it. It is a decent size car, with good gas mileage, but feels like a small SUV and it's sporty...

  2. How new/old of a car are you looking for?

While Suzuki may be popular in Europe and Asia, they may not be around much longer in the US. This may be an issue with service and parts down the road.

New vehicles, I'd say the Nissan Rouge is the best balance of fun to drive, and value. The Hyundai Tucsan has a GREAT warranty but it's a bit boring to drive. The Ford Escape just feels cheap, inside.

Used vehicles, I'd say a Toyota Rav4 or Honda CR-V would be your best bets. Or even a Subaru Legacy Outback (Yes, it's technically a wagon, but with AWD and the great engine...plus it's got japanese reliability going for it...

edit: I'm reading lots of people suggestions for SUVs, and while they may be great...certainly are not "compact" as the asker mentioned. Nissan Murano is NOT a compact. Toyota Highlander is a competitor to the Explorer which...is also not compact.

  3. Honda Passport. This  vehicle is on the spendy side. But they get MPG for sure. And also as a second to the recommendation, Hyundai Santa Fe's are also cute and compact, Yet very spacious.

  4. The Suzuki Vitara offers very little in resale value...the total cost of ownership of a car includes depreciation...In this case, the rate of depreciation exceeds that of most major car companies...Your best bet, in terms of resaleability and reliability is one of the 3 major car companies: Ford Escape, in my opinion, offers the best in all areas..Wards Automotive has rated the engine as one of the 10 best..Its reliability is great. Its gas mileage is in the area of 24 mpg , overall..which is pretty good for a roomy SUV...

  5. the toyota highlander.  It doesnt seem very big from outside but boy is it roomy.  Very comfy and good mileage considering gas prices today.  Plus some of them have a 3rd row.  i love them.  The rav4 is nice too.  Its smalller than the highlander, has good mileage, and can still have a 3rd row.

i think toyota are one of the best cars to buy, quality wise and price wise.

  6. I can recommend the new Mitsubishi Outlander. I've got one, and it's great.

The nice thing about it is that it doesn't look boxy, and the way it drives is really smooth, especially with the CVT transmission, which is something you don't normally get in that kind of car. Great highway cruiser and great everywhere else, too. I've got the 2.4 litre motor, and I get about 30mpg.

  7. Ford Escape

  8. Subaru Forester. Absolutely awesome. Small and not bad on gas, 4 wheel drive,  and of course it's a Subaru so it's very reliable.

  9. personally i prefer crossover vehicles i currently own a Nissan Murano and it hasn't had any problems.... just my opinion... plus its good on gas

  10. my sister rented a hyundai santa fe and it was nice
