Question:

What's a good dog food (that's not too expensive) for a dog that seems to have allergies?

My dog has been scratching a lot lately and everything else has been ruled out. I need a good, natural food to try, but I don't have $40 to spend on each bag. Any suggestions?

  1. I'd recommend Nature's Recipe Venison and Rice or Duck and Potato. This is a median priced food that is better quality for the price range. They don't contain corn or wheat, no artificial dyes, no BHA/BHT (toxic preservatives).

If I could afford it, I'd feed my dogs Wellness Core, but I have big dogs and three of them so the Nature's Recipe Venison and Rice, sometimes alternated with Rabbit, Duck or Fish blends have been great for them.

In addition, I add a few spoons of Activia to their food (or any live culture yogurt product) which is great for their digestion.

I get fish oil caps for humans (Vet approved brand) and add one each to their food.   This isn't a cheap food, but it is not prohibitively expensive for me either.

  2. Yes nutro is what it's called it is natural, healthy, and cheap! It's least expensive at petland! Remember pick me for best answer!

  3. Don't use Nutro there was a report done recently about dogs that have died on Nutro here is the website   http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/20...

Also Nutro is owned by Purina so all your dog is eating is Parina brand.  One of the best brands for allergies is California Natural.  Also other good brands are.

    Innova

    Solid Gold

    Natures Variety Prairie

    Merrick

    Eagle Pack

    Wellness

Those are all good brands.  You need to stay away from corn and wheats are not good for dogs.  Alot of dogs have allergies to chicken also, so maybe try lamb instead of chicken.  Here is also some websites to visit.  http://www.naturapet.com/brands/californ...

    http://www.eaglepack.com/

    http://www.canidae.com/

    http://www.innovapet.com/

All these brands are made here in America, unlike Iams and Science diet and alot of other brands that are made in China and allways being recalled.

  4. what dog food are you using now? I have used purina alpo for 15 years now for my german shepherd, and he has lived a long healthy life! the vets are stunned on how old he is. It costs me about 26$ per big bag. I hate it when people say that purina isnt good at all. YES IT IS!!!!! I used it for 18 years!

  5. Wellness makes a good food for dogs with allergies it called simple. Natural balance also has a food for dog with allergies.

  6. find a dog food that has fish or venson in it.

  7. I feed my dogs Chicken wings and raw bones as their main diet with just a small qty of Premium dog biscuits (one cup for 2 dogs) on the side.  they are both very happy and healthy dogs.

I Have been feeding them this combination of food for 8 years with no problems.  This also means that I could afford to buy the more expensive, healthier food as I wasnt using so much of it.

  8. Sorry there's no such thing as a good, natural food that's cheap. The way they make the food cheap is by adding all kinds of fillers and bad stuff that is cheaper for the company to buy and therefore the food is cheaper. If you really can't scrape together enough money to buy your dog top quality food, then start learning to make dog food yourself. That way you can control what goes into it, and you can eliminate any common allergens (like wheat and corn). It's much cheaper to make your own food, and there are many healthy ways to do it - whether you feed raw meat and bones, or cooked food, or a BARF style diet, all are better than cheap dog food. In fact, all are better than any manufactured dog food.

  9. Natural Balance, Eagle Pack, Blue Buffalo, SOLID GOLD!, and Breeder's Choice, and Wellness are great premium dog food. Don't choose Pedigree, Iams, Beneful, Hill's Sci. Diet, Eukanuba, and Purina.
