If someone were to have only about $1000-$5000 but was interested in investing it, what would you recommend?

Preferably something very safe, even if growth potential is low. Or, if possible, half into something with high risk-high growth potential and half into something low risk-low growth potential.

Also, I do not mind tying my money up for 1-10 years (I have patience).

  2. Bank CDs or a money-market fund.

  3. ETRADE, I would look into DFR , HTOG, and GTX as some cheaper stocks that you are sure to make money on  and get a substantial amount of stocks. Please read up on these stocks before investing, but they have an outlandish amount to be made off a small investment..Now is time with stocks so low, it will bounce up, this country is in serious trouble, soon as the war stops and we get a new president in office things can only sky rocket. People need to realize as well, to buy American.  All this free trade c**p is destroying our country. I say build alternative energy and stop relying on other countries so much and we will be back in great shape. Just my opionion, research before doing anything.

  4. invest in a mutual fund/ETF, therefore you will diversify your investment and over the long run they are almost certainly give you steady return

  5. Try Federal bonds, each vary in series based on government dependencies. They are basically insured by the government, I suggest "laddering" your money, so you will have money to fall back on as each matures 2yr, 5yr, 10yr, usually count in two year allotments.

  6. Buy Euros or Yuan. Get that money out of this economy as soon as possible if you want it to still be worth something when we finally hit the bottom of this economic mudslide.

  7. Buy mutual funds and Pick the best stock broker, one with low fees.., it took me some time to see that most of my gains were lost to the fees i paid to actually buy stock and sell it, i suggest zecco, they were recently given a great review by wall streets "smart money", and are the ONLY ones who offer free stock trades.
