Do they make a low sodium kitten food? He has a heart defect and I heard that kind of food would be better.

  1. I wasn't going to answer, but what the heck.

Like the person above me suggested, you can make your own cat food.  It doesn't have to be difficult and it can be very inexpensive.  And that way you can control what goes in it.

As far as commercially prepared foods are concerned, I'm not sure what might be low sodium or high sodium for that matter.  A good rule of thumb is that if you buy it in the grocery store, it's c**p.  But in this case I don't want to generalize and say "Brand X is a very good food, I'm sure it'll be fine."

So I've starred your question and perhaps one of my contacts with more knowledge there will pop in.

  2. Hmmm, needs just a little more salt.

  3. There probably are specialty foods for pets with diet restricttions but your best bet would be to make his food for him- a lot of specialty pet foods are ridiculously expensive. Scraps of leftover cooked meats and fish with blanched veggies and grains, thrown into a blender and pureed. If you use whole foods instead of packaged you can ensure that no additives get into the food and you can blend in any medication he needs to take. Consult your vet for appropriate food blends or extra additives like vitamins, minerals, etc... and what you should avoid serving your cat, like blending in milk or oils. Good luck!
