Question:

What's a good motorcycle for beginners?

I'm really interested in getting a cycle for my 18th birthday, but I don't really know what would be good to start out with. I really want a Ducati but I'm not naive enough to actually think I'd be able to control one (or afford one) without having an easier to control bike first, any suggestions?

  1. The Honda Rebel is great, if you are taller you might consider a bigger bike, somewhere in the 350-500cc range.  Just make sure it fits well and you can flat foot while seated.  If you go small, you can always sell it for something bigger later, there are lots of beginners out there.  Also, smaller bikes get much better gas mileage, a definite plus.

  2. Most people will tell you to buy a small bike at first. I disagree.

What you need as your first bike is a ligtweight bike with a reasonably strong power band and a low center of gravity.

The reason I say this is because you will want to grow accustomed to riding without the weight of a large bike to impede your learning curve. The low center of gravity will make the bike easier to handle, and the reasonable power curve is just as important as brakes to get you out of trouble when needed.

Just as people come in all shapes and sizes, so do bikes. Get one that you feel comfortable on and can reach all the controls without stretching or straining.

Personally, I don't like the "sit-up-and-beg" sitting position. My Matchless is absolutely perfect, but obviously you can't just go out and buy a Matchless. They haven't been made since 1963. My BMW is ok, it has a low center of gravity, but power is a little lacking.

You really need to just start going to dealers and looking at bikes. Sit on them, find all the controls, take them for test rides. I almost bought a Suzuki, but test rode it first. I found that the handlebars ran into my leg in a tight turn. I was just the wrong shape for the bike.

See you out on the road. Ride safe, live long.

  3. get a 250 ninja, if you want a sportbike

    or a 400 cruiser
