Just wondering. What are the difference makers between filters? Some filter tinier microns which is better I hear. What's a good one?

  1. Without putting it on a personal spin, the thing to look for is the Single Pass Efficiency (SPE) and Multi-pass efficiency (MPE).  These are the ratings that determine how well it captures particles.  Additional considerations are the anti-drain back (holds the oil for later restarting to assure a fast oil delivery at start-up) and the over-pressure bypass (should the filter become completely clogged it should allow bypass to assure oil is still delivered to the engine).

That said, Puralator One seems to be highly rated in the SPE, as well as the Bosch.  Amazing enough, the Walmart brand has a very high SPE rating.  These should be good quality filters to rely on.  I've started using the new Amsoil Ea series filter.  It is a synthetic filter, at the top in SPE, MPE ratings and good for 25k miles or 1 year.  Even at $10/ea and the Amsoil at $8/qt, this makes it MORE affordable than regular oil/filters, less time, and a proven record of less wear on your engine.

  2. it depends.  if you are only going 3K between changes, anything will do the job and keep your car running.  but if you are going longer, a premium filter is better.

there is more than just a difference in microns.  the material is different.  a traditional filter uses cellulose (paper) to filter, quality filters use a synthetic filtering agent that resists heat break down and wetness break down better and longer than the paper ones do.  also, a premium one will have a larger cannister so that it can hold more filtered out material in it.  it may have a thicker wall one it so it resists bursting, but this is more a publicity stunt than a need.  only race cars operate at high enough oil pressure for this to ever matter.

a good filter will also have a drainback valve in it to prevent unfiltered oil from reentering the motor after shutoff.

me, i like the puralator ONE, the Mobile and the K&N.  also the napa gold is good.  the puralator in all the tests i've seen out scores the others in filtration, but i'm not too keen on it's anti drainback set up and so use the others alot.

  3. Mobil 1 filters are grand

  4. stay away from wix believe it or not the blue label carquest filters are one of the best. they come with equal or grater than original equipment specs. they have the newest  technology  in them and they actually have a true bypass valve bilt into them so if some reason it gets clogged it will still allow oil to flow and the valve is not just a little spring that releases its an actual valve.

  5. anyone that you have seen or heard of before will be ok.. everyone will have what they like and every company wil say their is better well ive been driving and working or car 45 yrs ive not found anyone better that i can say
