What's a good pace for cross country?

I went to Wal-Mart and bought a pedometer, but it's not very accurate at all. I've run from my house to the nearest park everyday, taking the same route but it always shows a different distance, one day it said I ran 0.8 miles, the next it says I ran 0.5 miles .. ?

It takes me around 4 mintues to run there, so I don't know how I'm doing because the pedometer is so inaccurate..

I know the pedometer measures your distance by only one specific stride, but I can't use the same stride going uphill, downhill, rough terrain ect..

How long do "good runners" take to run 1 mile?

  1. a jog for just a mile would be around 7 minutes

racing times would be at least at 6 or lower

i tried using a pedometer, it only worked when i walked; i thought running messed it up so i dont use it anymore

  2. k. I ran in XC in HS and i do 10 miles a day or more and i run mile for 51/2 min and faster. my coach always tell us do what is comfortably hard. meaning run harder then useally and keep at that speed.

  3. well before you do a race, you should do a few tempo runs, like your jog only at a faster pace, but a pace you feel like you can control. if you dont know your pace, then when a race comes i recommend pack running, where you run with a group, preferably with teammates. usually for a girl a pretty good mile is like 5:30 and a pretty good 5k would be like a 19:40

  4. Wal-Mart has cheap items but stay away from them. Invest in a more expensive pedometer. Don't know how old you are but the good highschoolers in Cross Country and Track & Field run 5-6 minutes a mile. College runners in 4-5 minutes a mile. Got to remember that the time to run a single mile is never consistent with running 2+ miles unless you've trained for a long time.

*Used to be in High School XC and Track & Field.

  5. Hmmm. If you're trying to train for cross country you shouldn't really worry about using a pedometer. Plus you are suppost to be running more than 1 mile everyday. Cross country is not about speed as much as it is about keeping one steady pace and running it for a LONG distance without stopping. Good runners that are girls would run between 5 to 6 minute miles. But you should be running at least 3 miles daily to get in good shape to be in Cross Country. That's what we do here at my school.

    Hope this helped:D

  6. Go buy a good one, don't be cheap, because you get what you pay for.

  7. I would consider myself a good runner and I usually practice between a 6:30 and 7:00min pace on easy runs, if that helps any.

  8. go to runningmap.com

    and look up how far

    its accurate and free!

i run bout an 8 min mile on an easy day
