What's a good place to take a day trip to in Southern California?

I live in Ventura county in Southern California and I am trying to find something fun to do this weekend, so I was thinking it would be fun for my boyfriend and I to take a day trip somewhere. What's a good place to take a day trip to? Preferrably some place not super expesive. If you have any ideas I would appreciate the help.

How about visiting one of the Channel Islands? Channel Islands National Park consists of 5 islands; Anacapa is the most accessible as it is the closest to the Mainland (all require a boat trip). Pack a lunch (there are no restaurants or stores ) and explore the flora and fauna. Make sure to take a camera. You take the boat from the Ventura harbor (reached via Victoria Ave. from the north, or Seaward Ave. from the south). Joshua Tree National Park is also quite beautiful, however it's about 3 hr 15 min from Ventura. Visit http://www.nps.gov for more information on the National Parks.
